Prof. Evangelia Charmandari
National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Medical School Professor of Pediatrics – Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology
Evangelia Charmandari graduated from the University of Thessaloniki Medical School, as a valedictorian of her class (highest distinction). She completed her specialization in Pediatrics in the UK and she was awarded the ‘Membership of Royal College of Physicians [MRCP(UK)]’. She was further subspecialized in Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology at the London Centre for Paediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism, at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and University College Hospital, London, UK. She was awarded the ‘Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in General Pediatrics (CCST-General Pediatrics)’, and ‘Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in Pediatric Endocrinology’ (CCST-Pediatric Endocrinology) by the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health, London, UK.
She obtained a Master of Science in Clinical Pediatrics and a PhD in Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology, which were awarded by the University College London, University of London, in 1998 and 2001, respectively. She subsequently undertook a Postdoctoral fellowship in Molecular Endocrinology and Cellular Biology at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, MD, USA (2000-2004). She also worked as a Consultant in Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology at St. James’ University Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary, Leeds, UK (2006-2007).
Following 15 years of clinical and research (clinical, translational and basic science) work in the UK and USA, Dr. Charmandari returned back to Greece in 2007 having been awarded a European Union reintegration grant. She used this opportunity to establish and develop the Laboratory of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Center for Clinical, Experimental Surgery and Translational Research at the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens (BRFAA) (2007-2010).
In February 2011, Dr. Charmandari joined the faculty of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Medical School as an Associate Professor, and became Full Professor of Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology in 2015. She carries out her clinical and research work at the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes, First Department of Pediatrics, “Aghia Sophia” Children’s Hospital in Athens, Greece. She is also the scientific supervisor of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Center for Clinical, Experimental Surgery and Translational Research at the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens (BRFAA).
Professor Charmandari is the Chair of the Committee for the approval of institution of growth hormone treatment in Greece, Chair of the Clinical Practice Committee of the European Society for Pediatric Endocrinology (ESPE), Chair of the Intersociety Clinical Practice Committe και το European Society for Pediatric Endocrinology (ESPE), Member (ex-Officio) of the ESPE Programme Organising Committee, Member (ex-Officio) of the ESPE Communication Committee and Associate Editor of the Yearbook of Pediatric Endocrinology and Hormone Research in Paediatrics.
Her research work led to 344 publications in refereed peer-review journals (108 in SCI journals, 9 in non-SCI journals, 1 book, 56 chapters in books and 170 publications in conference proceedings). Her publications have an impact factor of 665.918, personal impact factor of 567.318 and received 6789 Google Scholar citations (H index = 41, i10 index = 77) and 4336 Scopus citations (H index = 36).
She received the ‘Henning Andersen Prize’ of the European Society for Pediatric Endocrinology, as well as several awards by the Hellenic Endocrine Society, the Hellenic Society for Adolescent Medicine, the Medical Association of Athens and the Health Business Awards. Finally, she received research funding of €1,680,000.00 as Principal Investigator (PI) and €790,000 Ευρώ as Co-PI from the European Union and Greece.
