Dr. Kaya Akyüz

Kaya Akyüz is a Scientist at the European Research Infrastructure for biobanking BBMRI-ERIC and PhD candidate in Science and Technology Studies (STS) at the University of Vienna (submission planned in June 2023). He has completed his bachelor’s (2011) and master’s (2013) degrees in Molecular Biology and Genetics at Boğaziçi University, Istanbul and as a molecular biologist worked at the research institutes MPI-Molecular Biomedicine (Münster), IMP and MFPL (Vienna). Having been awarded the uni:docs Fellowship of University of Vienna, his doctoral work in STS focuses on the dynamics in the emergence of research fields at the crossroads of genetics/genomics and social sciences. He has worked as a university assistant and lecturer at the University of Vienna and as a lecturer at the University of Malta. At BBMRI-ERIC, he is currently involved in three H2020 projects: CY-Biobank (Grant agreement ID: 857122), INTERVENE (Grant agreement ID: 101016775) and EUCAN-connect (Grant agreement ID: 824989) focusing on the development of a biobank, generation of polygenic scores with AI, and federated data sharing in health research, respectively. His research focuses on knowledge production at the intersection of life sciences and social sciences, contemporary data practices in science and infrastructures.
